It was 9.30pm when Lou realised she hadn’t spoken to Doug as promised. She raced up to his first-floor room and knocked on the door.

‘You may enter,’ he said. He was lying in his bed with the duvet right up to his chin. Hostel 4 was playing on his ancient television.

‘How are you doing?’ she asked.

‘Good, good.’

‘Did you talk to Euan?’

‘Euan? About what?’

‘About how worried you’ve been, the five thousand and everything.’

‘Oh aye. Nah, it’s all good, I was just paranoid.’

‘So you don’t want to make a plan?’

‘Oh, I’ve made one.’

‘Yeah?’

‘Let me know if you or any of your flatmates want some cocaine, eh?’

‘That’s not appropriate, Doug.’

‘I’m joking. I’m feeling much better. Thanks for checking on me. I appreciate it.’

He was probably stoned. She’d try him again later, the poor thing.

She wanted to head upstairs to Tim’s floor, but stopped at the light switch on the landing, which she checked – it was indeed broken. She wondered who he’d had a date with, where they’d gone, what they’d done.

She made her way to the basement, where Rob was watching Dexter in the front row. The basement curtains were open. She could see legs walking by. She rushed over to the window, looked at the miniscule courtyard and the pavement above, which was at the perfect height for the viewing of legs, legs passing by, lots of legs. Rob was in upskirting heaven.

‘Shall I shut the curtains?’ she said. The street was busy tonight with all the clubs and pubs nearby. Thursday was party night. Or one of them. There would be so many drunk legs. She wondered if she was imagining things, if she was the creepy one, even to have the idea, even to notice the legs. The women had gone. No-one was in danger. She needed a coffee, some time alone in the office.
